Take the initiative

What do you think of my catchy title. Take the initiative!

Pretty self explanatory right? Wrong!!!…Well at least in my view. Let me explain.  If you are at all like me, you are into improving you life consistently over time.  Slow and steady wins the race, as they say.

If you are into personal growth, you read books, watch videos, go to seminars, talk to coaches; the list is endless. Along the way you hear a lot of “buzz words” industry jargon used by people to stick in your mind. The trouble I have sometimes is I hear a word or phrase and I either think “What the Hell does that mean or “How the hell do I apply it in order improve my life?” Fear not I have a solution 🙂

The phrase that has been running through my head today is “take the initiative” and to be honest I have been want to address this for quite some time , why? Because when I was an employee  taking initiative made sense .  Example: Doing something (without be asked ) that will help your team, the company you work for and impress your boss.

However, I have always struggled with how and why I should take initiative in my personal and/or entrepreneurial  life.

Bonuses for taking initiative in your

Personal Life

  • You get a a head of the rush. If you have a decent sized to-do list, the longer you procrastinate, the less time you have to get it done and you would be rush trying accomplish everything and your accuracy and quality will suffer.
  • You feel less stressed out. You have given yourself plenty of time to complete things and they become more enjoyable
  • You feel as sense of accomplishment and pride, because you are done things early and it will motivate you do keep attaining those same results

Business or  entrepreneurship

  • All three from above apply!
  • If you take initiative, you will thrive off that energy
  • You avoid the mental game “what if” or “if I had only” this is self inflicted torture 😉
  •   You set an good example for others. and most likely motivate them to do better and be better.

I hope that helps you take initiative, and reap the rewards.

Make a decision or else

Today I am reflecting on the lesson I learned today. If you do not make a decision, one way or the other you will get NOTHING!

Just in case no one understands what that mean I was a bit  of a “fence sitter” today.  I changed my mind as easily as a leaf in the wind changes direction and, as a result, my day turned out like my arm! No permanent damage, but it was ugly!

Here is what happened:

I was up very early to take client calls for a contract that I have and Tuesday night is my Aikido night.

I also have the giant bruise on my bicep from some issues I had this weekend on Shawnigan Lake.

All the above led me to have an “off today”! I was more distracted than usual, which was very frustrating, but I got a lot done. I still put out quality calls and dealt with clients on a high level. On a personal level and even more so a physical level something felt kind of weird. I had loose plans with a friend for tomorrow and it turned out that it works better for their schedule to maybe do something tonight and since I wasn’t feeling that great I decided to skip Aikido.

What the hell is your point?

Well because I was feeling so wishy-washy, I did not make a decision and we never made a solid plan to meet. That is when I initially decided I AM  going to Aikido! I got my uniform on, gathered my things, I even went down to the car and got in it! Long story short, I had a few more mishaps and Aikido just wasn’t in the cards. So I sent a  text to my friend and said let’s meet up after all. However, by then plans changed and that wasn’t happening either.

So here I am not meeting with my friend  and even if I was Superman and changed my mind AGAIN! I was not going to be on time for Aikido.

What’s the takeaway from all this?

Well, I truly believe that based on the simple fact I couldn’t make a decision one way or the other (to miss Aikido or not or to hang out with my friend or not) I didn’t get to do any of it.

A simple example or cause and effect!

My bullet points for helping you make a decision and sticking to it!

  • Go with your gut!  I personally know when I ignore my first instinct everything goes to hell in a hand basket
  • Accept the possibility you could be making the wrong choice! – I am really good at beating myself up with the coulda, woulda, shoulda’s. Don’t be like that… you can not go back…so move on!
  • Pay attention to what your body is telling you!  I was tired and stressed and tried with all my “manliness” to push through, mind over matter..DUMB!  Brent Hammond a Business and Personal Coach ~ Founder of Trail Blazer Business Adventures says “Manage your energy, not your time!”
  • Learn from each of these events and commit to doing better next time! – Carry a notebook write in it often, date your entries, it is a fun an effective way to track your progress..Mine is full of “did wells” and “next times”
